Food Safety
Cronobacter
Cronobacter sakazakii was named Enterobacter sakazakii before 2007. This bacteria has been isolated from food ingredients like milk powder, dairy foods, meat, cereal products, legumes, spices, herbs, seeds various dried foods and environmental soil, water and dust. Some strains have been known to survive for up to 2 years in extremely dry environments. Because most neonatal Cronobacter sakazakii infections have been associated with the infant milk powders, this bacteria is actively investigated in infant food formulas. The name of this bacteria was made in honor of the Japanese bacteriologist Riichii Sakazakii. Bioscience Diagnostics Singapore provides multiple platform for detecting Cronobacter.
Cronobacter spp. is a gram negative, rod shaped, facultative anaerobic motile bacteria from the family of Enterobacteriaceae. They multiply at 35 to 44°C and can survive for up to 30 min at 55°C. They don’t grow at 5°C.
Biolife Chromogenic Cronobacter Isolation (CCI) Agar is a selective medium containing a chromogenic compound for Cronobacter differentiation. Positive bacteria grows with blue colonies. The presence of sodium thiosulfate / iron ammonium citrate indicator system allows for the differentiation of thiosulfate reductase positive bacteria (e.g. Proteus, Salmonella). These produce colonies with a slight black center.
Enterobacter Sakazakii Selective Broth (ESSB) is a lauryl sulfate broth modification for the selective enrichment of E. sakazakii, Enterobacter sakazakii Isolation Agar (ESIA) is a chromogenic and selective agar medium based on α glucosidase reaction for the isolation and differentiation of E. sakazakii. To 25 gm of sample add 225ml of ESSB and incubate at 37°C for 24 hours. Transfer a loopful of enrichment broth to the surface of ESIA plate and incubate for 44°C for 21 ± 3 hours.
Biocontrol GDS PCR System for Cronobacter
This is a PCR system for accurate, rapid identification of cronobacter. The system uses multiple layers of specificity including pick pen for removing matrix interference, highly specific primers and a patented MGB eclipse probe. GDS assays have AOAC, AFNOR validation. Results are available in 26 hours.
